Tips For Men To Avoid Losing Hair

By Scott Mogul

How can men delay hair loss and what baldness solutions for men are available if men do lose their hair? Alopecia in men can be due to countless factors, including certain medications, dietary inadequacies, stress, use of chemical hair treatments, and genetics. Some of these things can be prevented, but others cannot. For instance, you can make sure you eat a well balanced diet to avoid alopecia caused by iron or protein deficiencies, but you can't stop genetic baldness. You're stuck with your genes.

Pointers to Stop Hair Loss

If you're worried about hair loss, there are several things which can be done to help prevent it.

- Avoid medications that will cause hair loss if possible. Sometimes these medications are necessary, however. Never stop taking any medicines without talking with your health practitioner first. If hair loss is a worry for you, ask your dermatologist about alternate choices to medications that frequently cause baldness. Some common medicines that will cause baldness include drugs used to treat cancer, drugs used to treat bipolar disorder, anti-seizure medicines, blood thinners, drugs used to treat gout, and some high blood pressure medicines.
- Eat a well-balanced diet that includes adequate protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Most men need about 50 grams of protein each day. If you eat a well balanced diet you'll probably get all the vitamins and minerals you want, but if your diet is less than healthful, taking a daily multivitamin may help prevent hair loss due to dietary deficiencies. Speak with a registered dietician if you have fears about your diet.
- Learn how to manage your stress. If you want help with this, consider having a meeting with a therapist.
- Limit your usage of chemical treatments for your hair, like bleach, straignteners, tints, and permanent waves. If you use these chemical treatments for your hair, consider having them done professionally to reduce issues with your hair.

Baldness Solutions for Men

If you experience hair loss in spite of attempts to prevent it, there are a few options for treatment. Medicines like finasteride (Propecia) and minoxidil (Rogaine) are useful for some men, though these drugs can have unwanted complications. Surgical hair restoration, or a hair transplant, is another choice. In this procedure, hair is taken from the back of the head and transplanted to areas of the scalp where hair has been lost. There are some new hair loss discoveries available, as well, such as herbal and homeopathic formulas.
